The Viewing Guide List View

The Viewing Guide list view provides a summary of the movie title, production year and rating. The Smart Lookup feature helps you quickly find movies with minimal effort.

When entering a film title, each key press displays the movie titles that include all possible letter matches associated with the entered keys. Entering the number 7 not only displays films that start with the number 7, but also films starting with the letters P, Q, R and S. This input method allows most movies to be found with four keystrokes or less.

To look up a movie by its title using Smart Lookup:

  1. Press ONCE on the Smartphone keyboard key that contains the first character of the movie title.
  2. A filtered list of films will be displayed, showing only those films matching the entered criteria.
  3. Continue entering characters until the movie you are looking for is highlighted or visible.
EXAMPLE: To locate Pulp Fiction:
  • Tap the 7 key to display a list of films that start a 7, P, Q, R or S.
  • Tap the 8 key to reduce the displayed list to films that also have a second character of 8, T, U or V.
  • Tap the 5 key to further reduce the displayed list to films that also have a third character of 5, J, K or L. The list now only contains about a dozen films.
  • The film Pulp Fiction is now displayed on the screen, along with other films matching the above criteria such as Rules of Engagement.
  • Scroll down to Pulp Finction and click the Action/OK Button to view the details of this film.

NOTE: Leading articles of speech—A, An, The— are eliminated from title look-ups. (e.g. "The Graduate" is listed under "Graduate, The").

Generating Filmographies

Filmographies allow you to create a list of films that share something in common with the one that you are viewing. For instance, if you are a fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey, you may wish to see a list of films by its director, Stanley Kubrick. A director filmography will allow you to create this list.

To create a filmography:

  • Choose a film from the list using the Action/Ok button.
  • Select Menu
  • Select Filmographies
  • Select to perform a Cast, Director or Nationality Filmography.
NOTE: The filmographies only include films that appear in the Viewing Guide. Thus a prolific artist's filmography will sometimes represent a subset of their overall work.

Movie Manager Backup and Restore

As more information is added to the Movie Manager, it becomes more valuable and more difficult to recreate. As a result, you should ensure that this data is backed up on a regular basis.

Backing up the Movie Manager database

  • Quit the Movie Guide on your handheld using Menu > Exit.
  • Establish an ActiveSync connection with the desktop and explore the files on your device from the desktop. The contents of your documents folder should appear.
  • Locate the file named "Movie-ListsVolume" and copy it to a folder on your desktop. This file contains your entire Movie Manager database.

Restoring the Movie Manager database

  • Quit the Movie Guide on your handheld using Menu > Exit.
  • Establish an ActiveSync connection with the desktop and explore the files on your device from the desktop. The contents of your documents folder should appear.
  • Locate the file named "Movie-ListsVolume" on your desktop and copy it to the Documents folder of your handheld device, overwriting the file that is there if necessary.
NOTE: Although the ActiveSync "Files" synchronization facility is designed to keep device files "in sync" with the desktop, we do not recommend this option for reliable Movie Manager backups. If you do use file synchronization, we recommend that you regularly copy of the file from the "synchronized files" folder and put it in a safe place.
