Movie Manager Backup and Restore

As more information is added to the Movie Manager, it becomes more valuable and more difficult to recreate. As a result, you should ensure that this data is backed up on a regular basis.

Backing up the Movie Manager database

  • Quit the Movie Guide on your handheld using Menu > Exit.
  • Establish an ActiveSync connection with the desktop and explore the files on your device from the desktop. The contents of your documents folder should appear.
  • Locate the file named "Movie-ListsVolume" and copy it to a folder on your desktop. This file contains your entire Movie Manager database.

Restoring the Movie Manager database

  • Quit the Movie Guide on your handheld using Menu > Exit.
  • Establish an ActiveSync connection with the desktop and explore the files on your device from the desktop. The contents of your documents folder should appear.
  • Locate the file named "Movie-ListsVolume" on your desktop and copy it to the Documents folder of your handheld device, overwriting the file that is there if necessary.
NOTE: Although the ActiveSync "Files" synchronization facility is designed to keep device files "in sync" with the desktop, we do not recommend this option for reliable Movie Manager backups. If you do use file synchronization, we recommend that you regularly copy of the file from the "synchronized files" folder and put it in a safe place.

My Movie Import/Export

Exchange your Movie Manager information with your desktop by means of a tab-delimited file (TDF). This advanced technique will allow you to add or update films within the Movie Manager of the Leonard Maltin Movie Guide on your handheld from an external database, or to transfer your current Movie Manager to the desktop for use within other desktop programs. These include but are not limited to Excel, Access and FileMaker.

The files that have been imported/exported will be sent to the desktop in the following locations.

  • MyMoviesImportPPC.tab: This is the file that is used to import data from the desktop to the Movie Manager of your handheld.

  • MyMoviesExportPPC.tab: This is the file that is created by the conduit when the Movie Manager on your handheld has exported data.

The location of the files used by the My Movies and Events Conduit is the desktop computer's "My Documents" folder.

Importing films into Movie Manager

In order to import your tab delimited file into Movie Manager, you must:

  • Enable Import films to desktop on the handheld

  • Select an import type

  • Ensure that the Import/Export feature of Movie Guide Connect is enabled. See Configuring_Settings.

To Enable Import

  • Tap Menu

  • Tap My Movie Import/Export

  • Select Import films from desktop from the dropdown menu

  • Select an import type

  • Tap Ok and then synchronize your handheld

Import Types

If you currently use a desktop application to track your movie data, you may transfer that data to the Movie Guide, provided that you can create a TDF file.

There are four different methods for importing data from a desktop file to the Movie Manager on the handheld.

  1. Add New Records: Adds all records from TDF to handheld.

NOTE: If record exists on the handheld, the record will not be duplicated.
  2. Replace matching records: Only those records that match corresponding records on the handheld are replaced. New records will not be added.

Requirement: TDF consisting of ALL fields used by the Leonard Maltin Movie Guide. If a field is left blank or is not included in the text file, the matching field on the handheld will be made blank as well. If you have a TDF with a subset of the fields, you should use Replace matching fields instead (see below).

  3. Replace matching fields: For each entry in the text file, existing handheld records are updated only in the fields that appear in the file. This option is useful for updating the handheld with a few data types which were not previously cataloged, but are cataloged in the desktop. This will prevent fields that have not been included within the import file from overwriting data that already exist on the device.

An example is a desktop data file that has recently been amended with personal notes or a mini-review. The import file contains updated information about the film but does not include "Notes". Only those fields that have been included will be replaced (if different) and all other fields will remain unchanged.

NOTE: Desktop entries that do not appear on the handheld are added to the handheld as new records.

Requirement: Tab-delimited file with the following fields: Title, Year, Running Time, plus any other fields to be updated on the handheld.

  4. Skip matching records
Adds entries from desktop, skipping matching handheld records even if there are differences.

NOTE: For import types #2, #3 and #4, a match is considered to be any record that has the same Title, Year and Running Time. Match is case sensitive, however leading/trailing spaces are ignored if they exist.

Additional Notes

  • During an Import, an Export is first initiated as a precaution in order to backup your current Movie Manager data. If a second sync is initiated after the initial import, your Export file will be overwritten by the newly imported data.

Updating Event Information

The Movie Guide's Event Calendars are automatically kept up to date using a desktop conduit. During ActiveSync, the conduit will connect via the Internet to a series of online event calendars and retrieve any new event information that has appeared. This ensures event information on the handheld is always kept up to date.
